The Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission has named three magistrate judges as finalists to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Lake County Superior Court bench.

Finalists named by the commission last week include Magistrate Judge Natalie Bokota, Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Miller I and Magistrate Judge Timothy Ormes.

The three nominees will now be submitted to Gov. Eric Holcomb for consideration.  The Republican governor will make the final selection on which magistrate will fill the vacancy that will open Jan. 1, when Judge Clarence Murray retires from Criminal Division, Room 2.

The commission in August began accepting applications for the position. Public interviews of 10 candidates took place on Oct. 22, and the commission subsequently met to deliberate.

Established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1973, the commission is chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter and must submit to the governor a list of three candidates with written evaluations of each candidate.

Upon receiving the list of nominees, Holcomb has 60 days to make his appointment.
