Coming off a robust 2021 admissions cycle, law schools could see another surge of applicants during the 2022 cycle, according to recently released data by the Law School Admission Council.

The LSAC has reported an overall uptick of 2.0% in applicants in October compared to the same time in 2021. While the uptick in applicants has since dropped to 1.1% as the November numbers are being tallied, the numbers still outpace 2020 figures by 29.8%.

Additionally, applications are up 3.0% from one year ago. Compared to this time in 2020, the applications have recorded a 55.4% increase.

“While it is too early to draw firm conclusions regarding the 2022 cycle, the initial data suggests we will see another solid year – perhaps not quite as off-the-charts as 2021, but well above 2020 and previous cycles,” LSAC president Kelley Testy reported to the American Bar Association Legal Education and Admissions during the bar’s Nov. 19 meeting.

However, Indiana and its neighbors in the Great Lakes Region are not seeing any increase in applicants or applications in the 2022 cycle compared to the 2021 cycle, according to LSAC data. Overall, the number of applicants is down 1.6% in the Great Lakes Region from this point last year. Applications are off 2.2%.

Indiana, as of November, is registering a drop of 11.6% in applicants from 337 to the current 298. That is the second-highest behind Minnesota, which is recording a decline of 23.8%.

Conversely, Indiana’s applications did slightly better with a 6.6% drop from 1,950 to 1,822. This is the second-lowest behind Illinois, which recorded an application decrease of 2.0%.
