Hospitalizations from COVID-19 reach highest mark since last year

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Indiana have reached their highest level since late last year, according to the latest figures from the Indiana State Department of Health.

The department on Monday reported COVID hospitalizations rose from 2,931 on Saturday to 2,934 on Sunday. That’s the highest mark since Dec. 29, when hospitalizations reached 2,941.  The pandemic high was 3,460 on Nov. 20, 2020.

Hospitalizations from COVID have climbed 27% since Dec. 1 and 124% over the past month.

COVID patients now occupy 31.8% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

The state said three more deaths from COVID were reported on Sunday, raising the total death toll to 17,471. The seven-day average of deaths from COVID was 20 per day.

The department also reported 3,005 new cases of COVID-19. The seven-day moving average of cases is at 4,534 per day.

More than 4,451 new student COVID-19 cases have been reported over the past week by state schools. Schools also reported 243 new teacher cases and 386 new staff cases.

More than 3.5 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Monday at 5 a.m. after a weekend increase of 13,004. More than 1 million Hoosiers have gotten vaccine boosters.

The department said 60.8% of Indiana residents 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
