Judiciary study committee to consider new judges, consent to adoption

September 17, 2014

The Indiana General Assembly’s Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary meets Thursday for the first time this year and will look at the addition of judges in several counties.

Green, Madison, St. Joseph and Vanderburgh counties seek to add at least one judge or magistrate to their Superior or Circuit courts.

The committee also will discuss whether a father who has abandoned a birth mother during pregnancy should be required to consent to the adoption of the child.

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Senate Chamber. The committee is chaired by Rep. Greg Steuerwald, R-Avon. Its next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m.

But before the judiciary study committee begins, Steuerwald will be taking a look at code revision. He chairs the Code Revision Commission, which also meets for the first time Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Room 233 of the Statehouse.

The commission will consider proposed technical corrections and substantive problems in the Indiana Code. Commission members will also discuss two projects: the Incorrect Federal Citations Project and the Indiana Code History Line Project.

Both meetings Thursday may be watched live online at http://iga.in.gov.
