The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has begun a 60-day test of body cameras worn by officers.
Department of Public Safety Director Troy Riggs told WIBC the city has studied the technology for several months but now has begun trying them out. Riggs said the benefits of the cameras are protecting the public and training because the footage could help officers learn about the different situations they might face.
IMPD Lt. Mark Wood told WTHR that when both parties know they are being recorded, they’ll be on their best behavior. IMPD will use 12 cameras primarily in traffic situations during the test.
