The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic has tapped an internal candidate to be the agency’s next executive director.

Christopher Purnell, who has been managing attorney at the clinic since 2010 and has served as the interim director since August 2014, has been chosen to lead the nonprofit. He graduated magna cum laude from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and joined the clinic in September 2008.

The top job at the legal aid provider opened when Josh Abel stepped down to join the Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group at Faegre Baker Daniels. Purnell will lead a 40-person staff, including 13 attorneys, at the clinic which has offices in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne.

According to the appointment announcement, the clinic’s board of directors received applications from many qualified candidates but unanimously decided to name Purnell as executive director.

“Through the efforts of our dedicated staff and community partners, as well as Chris’s leadership and our committed board of directors, we look forward to the continued growth of the clinic in meeting the countless needs of our neighbors,” said Jenifer Brown, Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic board chair and partner at Ice Miller.
