The (Munster) Times reports Lake Station police Sgt. William Taylor was accused of failing to get help for 19-year-old Walter Evans in May 2010 after Evans said he wasn't feeling well. About 50 minutes after Taylor went off duty, Evans was found unconscious in his cell at the city jail. He died three days later.
Taylor was terminated last fall by the Lake Station Board of Public Works and Safety. A Lake County judge ruled July 31 that the board didn't have jurisdiction to fire him.
Evans' family and the city settled a lawsuit in 2012 for an undisclosed amount.
