Public defender Jacob Fish requested the continuance for Kyle Parker of Spencer during a hearing Friday because of discovery issues. Owen County Prosecutor Don VanDerMoere didn't object.
Parker is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the death of Shaylyn Ammerman. She was abducted from her crib at her paternal grandmother's house in Spencer before dawn on March 23. Parker had been drinking at the house with Shaylyn's uncle and step-grandfather. Her body was found the next day.
Parker's trial had been scheduled to begin Wednesday before Owen Circuit Judge Lori Thatcher Quillen granted the continuance. The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports Quillen scheduled the next hearing in the case for Oct. 5.
