Man gets 10 years for fatal I-69 construction zone crash

August 10, 2016

A motorist whose pickup truck crashed into and killed two highway construction workers has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Jordan Stafford of Fortville learned his sentence Wednesday after a jury last month found him guilty of two counts of reckless operation of a vehicle in a highway work zone.

Marion Superior Court Judge Sheila Carlisle, citing double jeopardy issues, threw out two other convictions for failure to obey a traffic control device or flagman.

The May 2014 crash on Interstate 69 on the northeast side of Indianapolis killed 49-year-old Kenneth Duerson Jr. of Indianapolis and 24-year-old Coty Demoss of Noblesville. They were standing along the road and about to move an arrow board after overnight paving. Stafford's truck was going 72 mph. He was 22 at the time.
