One of Justice Robert Rucker’s final arguments as member of the Indiana Supreme Court will be a Lake County case heard at his high school alma mater in Gary.

The court will travel to Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy, formerly known as Gary Roosevelt High School, to hear arguments March 9 in Danny Sims v. Andrew Pappas and Melissa Pappas, 45S03-1701-CT-26. The question for justices is whether evidence of decades-old crimes can be considered in a civil negligence suit.

Rucker has announced his retirement sometime this spring, but has not announced a firm date. Meanwhile, applications to replace him on the court are being accepted until noon Friday. Rucker, who graduated from Gary Roosevelt in 1964, practiced as an attorney in Lake County before serving 26 years as an appellate court judge.

The argument in Gary is coordinated with the support of the Lake County Bar Association, the Women Lawyers Association, and the Kimbrough Bar Association. More than 300 students are expected to attend from area schools, including the host school.

The 40-minute argument is open to the public and will take place at 10:30 a.m. CST March 9 in the school’s second-floor auditorium. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and those interested in attending will be required to enter through the school’s main entrance at 730 West 25th Ave. no earlier than 10 a.m. CST and go through security.
