The Indiana State Bar Association is offering free legal assistance to victims of recent severe storm flooding in southeast and northwest Indiana.

In partnership with Indiana Legal Services, the ISBA established a toll-free legal aid hotline for people impacted by severe storms and flooding in 22 counties declared a disaster area due to spring floods — Carroll, Clark, Dearborn, Elkhart, Floyd, Fulton, Harrison, Jasper, Jefferson, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Lake, Marshall, Ohio, Porter, Pulaski, Spencer, St. Joseph, Starke, Switzerland, Vanderburgh and White.

Those impacted can call to be matched with local lawyer volunteers providing free legal consultations on insurance claims, home repair contracts, landlord issues, replacing legal documents, and other matters.

“Providing service and advocacy for storm victims is a meaningful way the legal community can help those in need as they rebuild and recover,” ISBA President Andi M. Metzel said in a statement Tuesday. “Our association is uniquely positioned to mobilize throughout the entire state and we have the compassion and expertise of lawyers who are ready to help those in need as they face disaster-related legal challenges.”

People interested in receiving legal help can call Indiana Legal Services at 844-243-8570. The toll-free number will operate Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (EDT).

Storm victims interested in submitting online applications may do so here. Victims ineligible for assistance through ILS will be put on fast track to the Indiana State Bar Association to be matched with a lawyer.

When the president declares a major disaster, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division partner with the ISBA to help set up a hotline for disaster victims.
