The process for filling the vacancy in the Lake Superior Court has begun with 13 individuals submitting applications and the first round of interviews scheduled for next week.

Under the leadership of Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter, the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission will select three candidates from the pool of applicants and submit the names to Gov. Eric Holcomb by Oct. 5.

The vacancy in the superior court’s family law division was created when Judge Elizabeth Tavitas was appointed to the Indiana Court of Appeals in July.

Those who have applied for the position are Kathleen M. Belzeski, Lisa A. Berdine, Daniel Wayne Burke Jr., Katherine J. Garza, Thomas P. Hallett, Robert J. Harkins, Kristen D. Hill, Gina L. Jones, Amy Louise Jorgensen, Joshua Steven Malher, Frank Richard Piper Martinez, III, Nanette K. Raduenz, and Stacy J. Vasilak.

Interviews will start at 9 a.m. CDT Sept. 25 in the hearing room of the Lake County Board of Commissioners, located on the third floor of Building A of the Lake County Government Center, 2293 N. Main St., in Crown Point. If necessary, additional interviews will begin at 9:05 a.m. CDT Sept. 29, at the Crown Point Community Library, 122 N. Main St.

The interviews as well as the deliberations of the commission are open to the public.

Attorney members of the commission are R. Cordell Funk, David S. Gladish, Terrence M. Rubino and Paul G. Stracci. The non-attorney members are David S. Gearman, Aimbrell D. Holmes, Robert Morgan and Martha Wheeler.
