USA Diving wants dropped from lawsuit alleging sex abuse

  • Print

Indianapolis-based USA Diving is seeking to be dismissed as a defendant in a federal lawsuit from several female divers who say they were sexually abused and exploited by a former coach who worked in Ohio and Indiana.

The divers accuse USA Diving of not taking appropriate action to stop Will Bohonyi from coaching beyond listing him as a banned coach.

Diving’s national governing body said claims against it should be dismissed for several reasons, including that it didn’t knowingly participate in alleged misconduct and that some claims are legally time-barred.

Bohonyi is also a defendant in the lawsuit, which lists no attorney for him. He hasn’t responded to messages seeking comment.

He worked with divers at Indiana University and at Ohio State University, which fired him after allegations arose in 2014.
