The St. Joseph County Judicial Nominating Commission has announced its five finalists to fill the vacancy left by retired St. Joseph Superior Court Judge David Chapleau.

Finalists to fill Chapleau’s vacancy include:

  • St. Joseph Superior Court Magistrate Judge Keith Doi.
  • Lyle Hardman of Hunt Suedhoff Kearney LLP.
  • Andrew Jones of Jones Law Office LLC.
  • St. Joseph Probate Court Magistrate Judge Graham Polando.
  • Jamie Woods of Thorne Grodnik LLP.

Nominees will be submitted to Gov. Eric Holcomb, who will have 60 days to make his appointment upon receiving the list. Under state law, the commission must submit written evaluations of each candidate to the governor.

The commission, chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter, interviewed candidates Aug. 24 and then met in executive session to deliberate and select the five finalists.

Senior Judge Jeanene Calabrese will begin serving as a judge pro tempore in Superior Court 6 in Chapleau’s absence starting Aug. 31.

St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Steven Hostetler will also be vacating the bench this year. Hostetler, who has been certified as a senior judge, will retire Sept. 3. Applications have not yet opened for his position.

Senior Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura will begin serving as judge pro tempore in Superior Court 7, Hostetler’s court, beginning Sept. 7.
