Barnes & Thornburg is continuing its growth spurt with the opening of its new office in Boston, marking the fifth expansion into a new market in the last two years.

The firm has launched its first location in Massachusetts by hiring four experienced intellectual property partners from Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP and adding two partners from Barnes’ Washington, D.C., office. Primarily, the Boston shop will focus on intellectual property and investment and financing in the life sciences as well as corporate mergers and acquisitions, investment fund formation, commercial litigation and white-collar litigation.

Ronald Cahill, who has more than 25 years of experience in IP law, made the lateral move to Barnes from Nutter McClennen with his colleagues Heather Repicky, Rory Pheiffer and Derek Roller.

“We are thrilled to join Barnes & Thornburg during this exciting growth period for the life sciences industry and the firm as a whole,” Cahill said in a press release. “We were drawn in by Barnes & Thornburg’s focus on providing excellent legal services, which is crucial in Boston’s competitive legal market. In addition, the firm’s strategic commitment to expanding its life sciences practice, and its deep bench of accomplished life sciences attorneys, will be immensely valuable to our clients in greater Boston.”

Boston represents Barnes’ 20th office in the United States. Most recently, the firm opened an office in New York in 2020 along with the 2019 opening of three offices in Raleigh, North Carolina, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Salt Lake City.

Also, in June of this year, the firm added attorneys, consultants and staff to its Delaware office.

“Boston is a thriving center for innovation and investment, especially in the life sciences and biotech sectors, and establishing a presence there has been part of our strategic growth plan for quite some time,” Robert Grand, Barnes & Thornburg’s managing partner, said. “With strong additions like Ron, Heath, Rory and Derek, I’m confident that Boston will be another success story for our firm in line with our recent East Coast growth and our talent in Raleigh.”
