Brisco will begin working on cases immediately, according to a Wednesday announcement. The commercial court vacancy was created by now-Senior Judge Steven Hostetler’s retirement.
Brisco is the second judge to serve on the St. Joseph Commercial Court after the project was expanded to the county in 2021.
Indiana’s commercial courts were established to increase efficiency and accuracy in resolving commercial litigation. Cases that fall under certain categories of business disputes can be handled by the judges, all of whom have experience in complex case management and business law.
Commercial courts have been active for six years in Indiana and have seen a total of 1,329 cases filed, according to the Supreme Court. The number of commercial courts grew from six to 10 last year.
Brisco joins nine other commercial court judges including:
- Judge Craig Bobay, Allen Superior Court
- Judge Stephen Bowers, Elkhart Superior Court
- Judge Jon Brown, Hamilton Superior Court
- Judge Mark Dudley, Madison Circuit Court Division 6
- Judge Maria Granger, Floyd Superior Court
- Judge Thomas Massey, Vanderburgh Superior Court
- Judge Lakshmi Reddy, Vigo Superior Court
- Judge John Sedia, Lake Superior Court
- Judge Heather Welch, Marion Superior Court
