Dentons has officially established an office in Portland, Maine, expanding the global law firm’s reach in the United States.

Andrew Helman, who joined Dentons in January 2021 and has been working from Portland for the past 12 months, has been named the office managing partner. Earlier this year, attorneys Hannah King and Malina Dumas were welcomed onto the Portland team.

The Maine office is part of Dentons Bingham Greenebaum in the Dentons US Region, which has attorneys in Indianapolis, Evansville and Jasper as well as Ohio and Kentucky. According to Helman, the Portland location is part of Dentons’ strategy to have “boots on the ground” in most legal markets across the country.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead our Portland office and to be able to continue to deepen our relationships with clients here in Maine and across the globe,” Helman said in a news release. “We can provide clients in Maine with a deep bench and broad array of services.”

Using himself as an example, Helman said the strategy to create a national law firm enables him to confer and work with colleagues in the different places who not only know the rules of the local courts but also the customs of the local bar.

His bankruptcy and insolvency practice serves clients around the U.S., and when they need assistance with legal matters in other jurisdictions, even overseas, Helman can enlist the help of a colleague in that location rather than handing the matter over to an outside attorney from another firm.

“For me,” Helman told Indiana Lawyer, “Dentons provides a unique opportunity to live and work as a business lawyer in Portland, Maine, while doing sophisticated and interesting work outside of Maine.”

Helman said the Portland office will be growing. Two paralegal professionals will be joining the team in a few weeks and the office is advertising an associate’s position. Also, the office is actively looking for lateral hires.

Toby McClamroch, managing partner of Dentons’ US Region, praised Helman’s leadership.

“Andrew has been integral in the growth of our Portland office this year …,” McClamroch said in the news release. “He is intimately familiar with the business climate and culture of Maine and the New England region, and his leadership will be a tremendous asset to our Firm and our clients as we continue to grow our presence in key US markets like Portland.”
