The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana is sponsoring a continuing legal education opportunity for attorneys on modest means and pro bono representation of victims of domestic violence in Indiana.

The one-hour session will be held at noon July 12 in the Jury Assembly Room of the Birch Bayh Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse, 46 E. Ohio St., Indianapolis. There will also be a Zoom option.

The goal of the program is to increase attorney awareness and participation in the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s Satellite Attorney Program, which provides representation to victims of domestic violence.

The training will be provided by the coalition’s legal counsel, Kerry Bennett. Indiana Southern District Chief Judge Tanya Pratt will give opening remarks.

Attendance is free and limited to practicing attorneys in Indiana. One hour of CLE credit is pending approval.

Registration to [email protected] is required by July 7. For more information, contact Mary Giorgio at [email protected].

According to the Domestic Violence Network, there were an estimated 8,591 victims in the criminal justice system in 2020 in Marion County. That year also saw an increase in emergency calls for help in central Indiana as pandemic health protocols limited service providers’ ability to help.
