Indiana COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations surge to another high

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported a record number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations for the second day in a row.

The state reported 4,462 new cases on Thursday, topping the previous high of 3,756 set Wednesday.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 1,897 on Tuesday to 1,948 on Wednesday. About 28% of the state’s intensive care beds are still available. About 26% are occupied by COVID-19 patients.

Thursday’s report also included 45 more COVID-19 deaths. Newly reported deaths have reached or topped 25 for 10 straight days and have been in double digits 28 times over the past 30 days.

The department said the seven-day moving average for cases reached another all-time high of 3,359.

The department reported the testing of 13,848 more unique individuals. Testing of new individuals has exceeded 10,000 for nine straight days.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals jumped from 16.7% on Wednesday to 17.1%.
