An Indianapolis man has been convicted of murder for his role in a 2021 shooting death.

In a news release, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced that Daniel Rhodes has been convicted for his role in the July 2021 shooting death of Michael McDowell.

Rhodes was found guilty of murder, with an added habitual offender sentencing enhancement, after a two-day trial.

On July 3, 2021, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 10000 block of Pineneedle Court on reports of a person shot.

Upon arrival, officers discovered McDowell deceased from a single gunshot wound to the head.

According to witnesses, Rhodes and McDowell were visiting the apartment and Rhodes was acting paranoid and was under the influence.

Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant for Rhodes’s residence and recovered the rifle used in the shooting with Rhodes’s DNA on the weapon.

IMPD SWAT apprehended Rhodes and he was transported to the homicide office.

In an interview with detectives, Rhodes admitted to approaching McDowell as he sat on the couch inside the apartment and shooting him in the head. Rhodes told detectives that he believed he was being set up for a robbery and thought McDowell had a gun.

There were no firearms recovered from McDowell or the apartment.

A sentencing hearing for Rhodes has been scheduled for April 12 at 11 a.m.
