The high court issued the suspension against Grant E. Helms on Oct. 30 after he was sentenced to 170 days on home detention for possession of methamphetamine in Morgan County.
The Indiana Lawyer left a voicemail and sent an email to Helms, but he did not immediately respond to the requests for comment.
Helms was first suspended in May 2021, following his 2020 arrest for possession of meth, according to the initial disciplinary complaint. Helms entered a plea agreement that reduced his conviction to a Class A misdemeanor.
Helms’ first suspension from the practice of law was stayed after 90 days, and he was required to serve a two-year probation.
But a year later, in 2022, Helms was found to have violated his probation after testing positive for meth, resulting in a revocation of his probation and a new 275-day suspension.
According to the 2022 probation violation order, Helms acknowledged his probation violation and asked to continue his probationary period with additional requirements. But the Supreme Court determined that revoking the probation was warranted.
With the 2022 suspension still in effect, another notice of finding of guilt was filed by the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission against Helms on Aug. 12, in response to him being found guilty of possessing meth.
According to the Thursday suspension order, the interim suspension will continue “until further order of this Court or final resolution of any resulting disciplinary action, provided no other suspension is in effect.”
