Paralegals are vital to the success of law firms across the legal profession. Ask any seasoned lawyer or law firm administrator and they will tell you the most successful practices are anchored by an exceptional team. I’m challenging our Indy legal community to invest in these key players more actively.

Are you considering the professional development of your paraprofessionals in the same manner as associates? Are you supporting their continuing education, professional networking and wellness? Have you given thought to identifying steps you can take to attract and retain committed, energetic and talented paralegals to sustain and grow your practice? Have you asked the paralegal in your life what you can do to help advance their career?

IndyBar established paralegal membership in IndyBar in 1994 to help. Opportunity in IndyBar is meant to support paralegals and provide another outlet for lawyers to do the same. It was the hope of bar leaders that paralegals would find their welcome space in membership and become active participants throughout IndyBar. Honestly, we continue to have much work to do to make this hope a reality.

IndyBar paralegal membership is designed to complement careers. Membership provides connection to education, a variety of professional as well as social networking experiences and a mix of products, publications and services.

I encourage paralegals to attend every CLE and event planned for IndyBar members, including the Bench Bar Conference. The resources available on the IndyBar website include tools, forms, etc. to assist in the daily workload and increase legal knowledge and leadership skills. Participation in the wide variety of pro bono activities is available and is an excellent opportunity to work with attorneys and judges, increasing professional exposure in the community.

Unfortunately, far too few paralegals in our legal community are IndyBar members. To help remedy that, paralegal membership is available now for new members for only $30. That’s less than a beer and a pizza, and we know the value of investing in a person is far greater than that. Take advantage of the offer by visiting www.indybar.org/paralegal before April 30.

While on the website, register for the Paralegal Appreciation Luncheon. It’s just another opportunity to invest, celebrate and enrich those that are contributing daily to success.•
