I celebrated my 40th birthday in February. With the commemoration of this milestone came the sudden realization that I had crested the proverbial young lawyer hill and begun my descent into middle-aged practitioner. I began to come to terms with the fact that my inbox would no longer be graced with invitations to the latest Young Lawyers Division event. Similarly, I accepted that my opportunities for socializing with other attorneys would likely be limited to post-court conversations, witty banter at continuing legal education events, and the awkward small talk that occurs during every Zoom call. Needless to say, I felt extremely forlorn while blowing out the candles on my birthday cake.

However, I am (albeit barely) a millennial. As a member of the generation that excels at out of the box thinking and is known for its creative problem-solving skills, I began to consider whether my peers had already mustered their creative faculties and solved my social dilemma. With bated breath I rushed to the Indianapolis Bar Association’s website and began perusing the upcoming events and education calendar. It was here I discovered, like Ponce de León finding the legendary fountain of youth, two upcoming IndyBar Foundation events that are certain to keep me feeling young and socially connected.

First, on April 20, the IndyBar Foundation will be hosting a Trivia Night. This evening of good-natured competition pits teams of up to five individuals in intellectual combat as they vie to become the official IndyBar Foundation Trivia Night champions. Adam Christensen, IndyBar Foundation’s immediate past president and trivia guru, will emcee the event. It will take place at Blind Owl Brewery, which is conveniently located at 62nd Street and Binford Boulevard and has abundant on-site parking. The event includes two drink tickets with your registration. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. and trivia starts at 6 p.m.

While I was certain that Trivia Night would enable me to keep my mental faculties sharp in my old age, I was still craving a social event, aka a party, that would help me avoid being put out to pasture with my more experienced colleagues. Accordingly, I anxiously advanced the events and education calendar, where I learned that IndyBar will be hosting its annual Block Party on May 26 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. This outdoor gathering at IndyBarHQ is the official kickoff to the summer! The Block Party will again feature food, beverages and great music, and serves as the perfect opportunity to reconnect with friends of all ages, rediscover downtown Indy and enjoy all the fellowship, food and fun our legal community has to offer. Once again, registration for the event is only $10 and includes two drink tickets. Importantly, all proceeds from the event will benefit the charitable activities of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation.

After learning about Trivia Night and the Block Party, I felt an immediate sense of relief. It seemed that my advancing age would not, as I had greatly feared, doom me to becoming a social pariah. Thanks to the IndyBar and IndyBar Foundation, there are still plenty of hip events I can attend. Accordingly, I slowly closed my laptop and Googled the best way to cover up my now-graying hair.•
