The Indianapolis Bar Foundation, funded by donations from the local legal community, recently gifted a Community Empowerment Grant of $35,000 to You Yes You!, a Indianapolis-based organization that is working to change the prison model and improve outcomes upon release, and is taking a holistic view of the relationship between inmates and their families. The foundation is the charitable arm of the Indianapolis Bar Association.

“Our approach is to not only offer services that aid formerly incarcerated individuals in finding housing and jobs but to also focus on bridging the gap incarceration causes with children,” said Ericka Sanders, You Yes You! founder and executive director. “We’re working to change the model with one-on-one re-entry planning and post-release support, carefully planned bonding events for fathers and their children, as well as training and therapy,” she said.

“Through funding and volunteer support from the Bar Foundation, You Yes You! will provide free legal assistance that focuses on paternity related issues, understanding rights as an incarcerated parent, DCS cases, filing legal paperwork, following up on already filed legal paperwork, child support and the need for representation due to having a previous public defender,” Sanders added.•
