By Bryssa Helton, Marketing & Communications Director for IndyBar

In February, members of the bench and the bar gathered for two celebrations at the Community Justice Center. On February 21, 2024 legal professionals attended the robing ceremony for the Hon. Marie L. Kern. The event was an impressive display with opening remarks from the Hon. Tiffany U. Vivo, a ceremonial oath administered by the Hon. Christina R. Klineman, and the robing of Judge Kern by members of her family. In her address to the crowd Judge Kern shared, “I appreciate the Marion County Judicial Selection Committee and Governor Eric Holcomb for giving me this opportunity. I spent 10 years in private practice before becoming a magistrate 16 years ago. This has been a long time coming, and I hope I make everyone proud.”

On February 28, 2024, the legal community came together once again to recognize the career of IndyBar past president, the Hon. Cynthia J. Ayers, at her retirement ceremony. After a processional of Marion Superior Court Judges and Magistrates, the ceremony featured the presentation of recognition from the Indiana Supreme Court (represented by the Hon. Derek R. Molter) and remarks from the Hon. William L. Nelson and Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. In her reflections, Judge Ayers thanked her friends, family, and colleagues for their never-ending love and support. After she officially retires on March 15, 2024, Judge Ayers plans to stay busy in both the legal community and the Indianapolis community at large. In her remarks she noted, “I would like to be part of addressing youth gun violence in the city. I think I have ideas about that that might help. I look forward to the opportunity.”

If you missed either of these prestigious events, mark your calendars now for our next ceremony! The robing ceremony for recently appointed judge Hon. A. Richard M. Blaiklock will be held on Thursday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Community Justice Center. He takes the bench following Judge Ayers’ retirement.
