As immigration enforcement actions continue to impact families and communities across our region, attorneys are increasingly called upon to provide guidance, support, and legal protection to those at risk. In response to this urgent need, the Hispanic Lawyers Division through IndyBar is hosting a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar titled “When ICE Knocks: Legal Strategies for Safety and Preparedness.” We invite our colleagues in the legal profession to join for this timely and essential event.
Why This CLE Matters Now
Recent years have seen a rise in both workplace and home investigations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As attorneys, we are often the first line of defense, whether advising a family on how to prepare for a possible detention, or counseling an employer on their rights and responsibilities during a worksite investigation. This guidance is especially valuable for in-house counsel at organizations where an ICE raid may be a possibility.
Our CLE is designed to equip you with the latest legal tools, practical strategies, and resources to better serve your clients in these challenging situations.
What You’ll Learn
The CLE aims to walk through a step-by-step preparedness plan for immigrant families. This includes creating a child care plan, understanding immigration options, and knowing your rights.
• Temporary Guardianship Documents: We will review draft forms for Health Care Representatives and Delegation of Parental Authority, tailored to ensure that children are cared for if a parent is detained.
• Know Your Rights Materials: We will cover checklists prepared by the American Immigration Lawyers Association for front desk staff, consent to searches, and the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees. Attendees will also receive updated “Know Your Rights” handouts from Immigrant Legal Resource Center, including the popular Red Cards in English and Spanish.
• Federal Arrest Warrants and ICE Raid Guidance: We will review sample federal arrest warrants, including the difference between a judicial and administrative warrant, and provide guidance on what to do before, during, and after an ICE raid.
Why You Should Attend
Whether you practice immigration law, family law, employment law, or simply want to be prepared to assist clients in crisis, this CLE will provide you with actionable knowledge and resources. This seminar is especially valuable for in-house counsel at organizations where an ICE raid may be a possibility. You’ll leave with practical documents, checklists, and strategies you can use immediately in your practice.
Join Us
We encourage all attorneys, regardless of specialty, to attend to be better prepared to assist clients and members of the community. The CLE will take place on Zoom on Friday, June 13th from noon to 1 p.m. featuring panelists: Vanessa Lopez Aguilera, López Law Office P.C.; Kiamesha-Sylvia G. Colom, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP; Peter Robbins, Peter Robbins Law LLC.
