The final round of public interviews for a seat on the Indiana Supreme Court will be held on April 5.

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will meet April 5 to interview the 10 finalists to fill the vacancy created by Justice Steven David’s impending retirement. The interview schedule will be as follows:

8:45-9:15 a.m.: Judge Derek R. Molter, Court of Appeals of Indiana

9:15-9:45 a.m.: Justin P. Forkner, chief administrative officer, Office of Judicial Administration, Indianapolis

9:45-10:15 a.m.: Judge Jennifer L. DeGroote, Allen Superior Court

10:30-11 a.m.: Judge Mark E. Spitzer, Grant Circuit Court

11-11:30 a.m.: William W. Barrett, partner, Williams Barrett & Wilkowski, Greenwood

11:30 a.m.-noon: Judge Gretchen S. Lund, Elkhart Superior Court

1-1:30 p.m.: Judge Rudolph R. Pyle III, Court of Appeals of Indiana

1:30-2 p.m.: Patrick W. Price, special counsel, Office of Management and Budget, general counsel, State Budget Agency, Indianapolis

2-2:30 p.m.: Ryan K. Gardner, Marion Superior Court

2:30-3 p.m.: Judge Dana J. Kenworthy, Grant Superior Court

The interviews, which are open to the public, will be held in the Fuse East Conference Room on the second floor of the South Tower at Capital Center in downtown Indianapolis, 201 N. Illinois St.

Members of the audience are asked to refrain from activities that could distract from the interview process, including questioning applicants during the formal interviews. Media and members of the public can question candidates before or after the formal interviews at a candidate’s discretion.

After the interviews, the seven-member JNC will deliberate in a closed executive session before holding a public vote on three finalists, whose names will be submitted to Gov. Eric Holcomb for final consideration. Holcomb will then have 60 days to select the state’s next justice.

The JNC, led by Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush, initially interviewed 19 candidates for the high court vacancy before selecting 10 finalists. The other nine candidates were:

  • Judge Jeffrey W. Clymer, Porter Superior Court
  • Judge James A. Joven, Marion Superior Court
  • Judge Robert D. Krieg, Gibson Superior Court
  • Matthew J. McGovern, McGovern Law Office, Fishers
  • Judge Amy S. Miskimen, Warrick Superior Court
  • Judge Jaime M. Oss, LaPorte Superior Court
  • William N. Riley, RileyCate, Fishers
  • Curtis E. Shirley, Law Office of Curtis E. Shirley, Carmel
  • Judge Lisa L. Swaim, Cass Superior Court

David, currently the longest-serving justice on the Indiana Supreme Court, will retire this fall, although an official date has not been announced. His successor will be Holcomb’s second selection for the high court, following Justice Christopher Goff in 2017.
