A man who shot and killed a woman on Indianapolis’ west side has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

Dwayne Wright was sentenced  for the July 2021 shooting death of Laura Gentry, who also suffered burns on over 64% of her body after Wright set her on fire following the shooting.

Wright was found guilty of murder and also of being a felon carrying a handgun with a prior conviction,  a Level 5 felony, after a three-day trial in February.

On July 9, 2021, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department  officers were dispatched to an alley in the 1100 block of Medford Avenue on reports of a person shot.

Officers approached the rear of the home and discovered Gentry on the back stoop suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and significant burn injuries.

Gentry was able to identify the man who shot and burned her as “OG Wayne” to officers before being transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died due to a combination of thermal injuries and gunshot wounds.

“OG Wayne” was Wright’s nickname.

As investigators examined the scene, they discovered shell casings and a burned plastic bottle in the alley near where Gentry was found.

It was determined that gasoline was inside the bottle. Forensic testing revealed that Wright’s DNA was on the plastic bottle.

Social media records showed that Gentry was communicating with a man prior to her death.

“With today’s conclusion, we hope Ms. Gentry’s loved ones can begin to move forward from this horrific chapter knowing justice was served, in large part, due to the tremendous bravery she displayed in her final moments,”  Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in written remarks.
