The vacancies will be left by Judges James Osborn and Gary Miller. Osborn announced his retirement earlier this summer. Miller will be stepping down once his term ends on Dec. 31, 2026, after a committee deemed him “unsuitable” for retention but did not explain why.
Interviews will take place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Community Justice Center and will be open to the public.
Each interview will last 20 minutes. Interviewees will include Marion County Deputy Prosector Brendan Haile and the following magistrates: Ross Anderson, Terrence Tharpe, Marcia Harper, and David Hooper.
Similar interviews will be conducted in Lake County on Oct. 23 to select five candidates for two vacancies there, according to Adam Clay, staff attorney for the Supreme Court Office of Communication Education and Outreach.
Candidates must reside in the county they serve in, be US citizens, and admitted to the practice of law in Indiana. Once interviews are complete, committee members will select five from the two sets of candidates. Those nominees will be forwarded to Gov. Mike Braun who will have 60 days to make a final decision or pass it on to Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush.
If selected, their pay will start at $185,513 per year, according to Clay.
