Vanderburgh County has a new Commercial Court judge, the Indiana Supreme Court has announced, naming Vanderburgh Superior Judge Thomas Massey to the post.

The Supreme Court appointed Massey to succeed former Commercial Court Judge Richard D’Amour, who retired in April. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb named Massey as D’Amour’s successor on the Vanderburgh Superior Court bench in February, and the Supreme Court announced his appointment to the Commercial Court on Wednesday.

Vanderburgh County is one of 10 Indiana counties that operates a commercial court.

Along with Allen, Elkhart, Floyd, Lake and Marion Counties, Vanderburgh County was part of the Indiana Commercial Courts pilot project that began in 2016. The pilot became permanent, and four additional counties — Hamilton, Madison, St. Joseph and Vigo —launched commercial courts this year.

The commercial courts program is designed to provide efficiency, accuracy and consistency in business litigation in the Hoosier State. According to the Supreme Court, 1,094 commercial court cases have been filed since the beginning of the pilot.
