Court of Appeals of Indiana Judges Paul D. Mathias, Nancy H. Vaidik and Leanna K. Weissmann will appear on the ballot for retention on Election Day in November.

Hoosier voters will decide “yes” or “no” on whether to retain the three appellate judges. Mathias represents the Third District, Vaidik represents the Fifth District and Weissmann represents the First District.

Members of the Indiana Supreme Court and Court of Appeals face a retention vote in the first general election that occurs at least two years after their appointment, then every 10 years after that.

The Indiana State Bar Association will survey its members on appellate judicial retention to “help voters make informed decisions about the judges on the ballot.” The final results will be available on the retention website.

Indiana’s Nov. 8 election will mark the first time Weissmann has faced a retention vote. Weissmann was appointed to the appellate bench by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2020.

Both Mathias and Vaidik were appointed to the Court of Appeals in 2000.

The Supreme Court’s Office of Judicial Administration has created a website  for Hoosiers to learn more about the judges seeking retention.
