Indiana Supreme Court justices have indefinitely suspended a Lake County lawyer who was suspended earlier this year for failing to cooperate with the disciplinary commission concerning a grievance against him.

Justices in February unanimously suspended Merrillville attorney Philip T. King after he failed to show cause as to why he should not be immediately suspended for failure to cooperate with an investigation against him.

The commission eventually moved to convert King’s suspension to an indefinite suspension from the practice of law pursuant to Admission and Discipline Rule 23(10.1)(c)(4).

King, the high court noted in its Friday order, has not responded to the commission’s motion to convert the current suspension. The nature of the grievance against King is not disclosed in the court’s orders.

Justices therefore concluded that his suspension should be converted to an indefinite suspension, effective immediately, upon finding that more than 90 days have passed since King was suspended due to noncooperation with the disciplinary process.

“Respondent is ordered to fulfill the continuing duties of a suspended attorney under Admission and Discipline Rule 23(26). To be readmitted to the practice of law in this State, Respondent must cure the causes of all suspensions in effect and successfully petition this Court for reinstatement pursuant to Admission and Discipline Rule 23(18)(b),” Chief Justice Loretta Rush wrote for the high court.

The case is In the Matter of: Philip T. King, 19S-DI-672.
