Merrillville Town Court Judge Gina L. Jones has been appointed to the Lake Superior Court, succeeding retiring Judge John Pera, who retired in June, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Tuesday.

Jones was among three finalists selected from 15 applicants who were interviewed in August by the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission. Holcomb selected Jones over two Lake County magistrate judges who also were finalists — Lisa A. Berdine and Michael N. Pagano.

In addition to her eight-year tenure as Merrillville Town Court judge, Jones also maintains a private practice. She previously served in the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, directing the child support division from 2003-2010.

A Gary native, Jones, earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and her law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law.

Jones will be sworn in as the judge of the Lake County Superior Court on a date to be determined, according to Holcomb’s office.
