The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic recently received two financial awards totaling $850,000.

The awards include a $250,000 grant from The Indianapolis Foundation and a $600,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment.

The Indianapolis Foundation Grant is for the Re-entry Justice Program from the Elevation Grant Program, which is a partnership between the foundation, Mayor Joe Hogsett and the City-County Council.

The goal of the grant is to decrease crime and increase opportunities for justice-involved individuals in central Indiana, while the Re-entry Justice Program’s purpose is to reduce the recidivism rate through reentry grace, which starts at expungements and reengagement.

“We are so thankful for our partnership with The Indianapolis Foundation who truly supports our mission of re-entry grace, which allows us to continue removing barriers for Hoosiers seeking a second chance,” Erin Hall, NCLC executive director, said in a statement.

The Lilly Endowment grant is for the Immigrant & Survivor Justice Program, which provides access to justice for immigrants, particularly survivors of crime or persecution, with various immigration law needs. The grant’s purpose is “to help human services organizations working in Indianapolis strengthen their ability to serve immigrants from low-income households as they acclimate to life in central Indiana and make progress toward self-sufficiency.”

“Support from Lilly Endowment will enable us to serve more of our immigrant neighbors in need of free legal services and resources,” Hall said in a statement, “giving them a sense of security that they may not have had before now.”
