Russell Griesemer, 41, died from hanging and respiratory arrest at the jail in Princeton on Feb. 16, 2014, according to the lawsuit. The suit alleges wrongful death and violation of Griesemer’s rights under the Eighth and 14th amendments.
According to Gibson County court records, Griesemer was ordered to jail Jan. 30, 2014, for violating probation on convictions of two counts of Class C felony battery.
The suit claims Gibson County defendants “acted negligently, recklessly and/or ignored a known risk and failed to take any reasonable measures to prevent the death” of Griesemer. The suit also alleges the county has declined after a public records act request to name the person or person responsible for his care and custody.
The complaint in the U.S. Court for the Southern District of Indiana is Alex Griesemer, Personal Representative of the Estate of Russell Griesemer v. Board of Commissioners of Gibson County, Indiana, et al., 3:15-CV-89.
