Opioid briefing to examine role of medical-legal partnerships

Indiana Congresswoman Susan Brooks and Indiana Legal Services executive director Jon Laramore will be part of a Legal Services Corporation panel discussion Wednesday on the opioid epidemic.

The LSC briefing, “How Medical-Legal Partnerships Assist Victims of Opioid Addiction,” will explore the role of medical-legal partnerships in confronting the opioid crisis. Lawyers stationed in healthcare facilities and partnering with healthcare providers are more easily able to reach patients and tackle the legal issues that are impeding patients’ health and recovery.

The briefing will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at 2075 Rayburn House Office Building, 45 Independence Ave. S.W., Washington, D.C. Updates will be provided on Twitter at #LSCOPIOID.

This event is held in cooperation with the co-chairs of the congressional Access to Civil Legal Services Caucus. Along with Rep. Brooks, R-Indiana, the other co-chairs are Reps. Joseph P. Kennedy III, D-Massachusetts, Debbie Dingell, D-Michigan, and Fred Upton, R-Michigan.

The briefing will feature three experts on medical-legal partnerships and a former client. Laramore will be joined by Weayonnoh Davies from Community Legal Aid in Massachusetts and Stephanie Harris of the Ohio State Legal Services Association.
