Applications will be accepted to fill Zent’s seat in the Allen Superior Court Misdemeanor and Traffic Division through Nov. 30, with the position expected to be filled in December.
Zent will succeed Judge John F. Surbeck, Jr., who is retiring Dec. 31. He was selected as the county’s next judge after the Allen County Judicial Nominating Commission interviewed six candidates to fill Surbeck’s seat.
In addition to a misdemeanor and traffic court caseload, the new magistrate will be tasked with:
• Conducting arraignments, motion hearings, status conferences, jury trials, guilty pleas and sentencing hearings;
• Participating in projects to improve caseflow management;
• Working extended and/or non-traditional hours, if necessary;
• Accepting continual public and media scrutiny of their public and private lives, if necessary, and;
• Performing other duties as assigned by the Criminal Division judges.
All applicants must be Indiana attorneys in good standing and will preferably reside in Allen County. Depending on the number of applications submitted, all candidates may not receive an interview.
Current total compensation for the magistrate position is $117,408, plus county and state benefits. The chosen candidate will be an employee at will.
