A Northern District of Indiana grand jury returned a 17-count indictment against five people for allegedly running a drug ring in South Bend, with the complaint also alleging that one defendant attempted to kill a federal officer in a Nov. 6 incident.

The Nov. 19 indictment charged DeCarlos L. Smallwood, Robert Sanders, Kumar Bishop, Sanena Williams and DeCarlos C. Smallwood with various drug, money laundering and/or firearm offenses related to the distribution of methamphetamine over the course of 2025.

DeCarlos L. Smallwood has also been charged with attempting to kill a federal agent while officers were searching Smallwood’s apartment last month.

Scott Proctor, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, said in a released statement that the grand jury alleged the defendants had committed “exceedingly serious crimes.”

Donald Schmid, an attorney representing Smallwood, declined to comment.

According to court documents, on Nov. 6, federal drug enforcement agents executed a search warrant on Smallwood’s South Bend residence, where they seized several firearms and about 1,000 grams of meth.

Smallwood and another female were at the residence during the search, and Smallwood allegedly fired a single shot at the agents.

Smallwood was then taken into custody.

According to an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint, Smallwood has several prior criminal convictions, including a 2019 charge for possessing with intent to distribute crack cocaine and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In 2021, he was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

The case is United States of America v. DeCarlos L. Smallwood, Robert Sanders, Kumar Bishop, Sanena Williams, DeCarlos C. Smallwood (3:25-CR99)
