The Allen Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission has announced the names of three finalists selected Monday for a judicial vacancy that will occur in January 2021.

Finalists selected for the bench are Allen County Magistrates Steven Godfrey and Samuel Keirns, as well as attorney Andrew Teel. Gov. Eric Holcomb will consider each of the three nominees before selecting the next Allen Superior judge.

A vacancy will occur in early next year when Judge Thomas Felts retires from the Allen Circuit Court. However, the vacancy will be for the Allen Superior Court-Criminal Division because Judge Wendy Davis will be transitioning to the Allen Circuit Court after an unopposed election.

The commission interviewed five applicants in Fort Wayne on Monday before announcing the finalists.

The commission, chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, consists of six other members. Under state law, the commission must submit to the governor a list of three candidates with written evaluations of each candidate.

Holcomb has 60 days to make an appointment after officially receiving the list of nominees.
