The number of deaths in Indiana from coronavirus reached 300 Friday, the second straight day that fatalities reached a new high. More than 100 people have died in Indianapolis, the Indiana Department of Health reported.

Statewide, 55 more people died from COVID-19 as of Friday, after the state reported 42 additional deaths Thursday.

The Health Department on Friday also reported 556 new cases in the state, bringing the total to 6,907. The rate of new cases increased Friday compared with the two prior days, as did the number of new tests reported to the agency. The department reported 35,040 people in the state had reported being tested for coronavirus – the largest daily increase since April 4.

In Marion County, the COVID-19 death toll rose to 107, and the number of reported cases climbed to 2,600.

Every county in the Indianapolis metropolitan area reported more than 60 cases: Hamilton (431), Hendricks (287), Johnson (270), Madison (204), Hancock (109), Boone (90), Morgan (89) and Shelby (63). The Indianapolis metro region accounts for about 60% of total Indiana reported coronavirus cases and about 57% of deaths.

Outside of central Indiana, counties with 60 or more cases as of Friday include Lake (576), St. Joseph (165), Allen (119), Decatur (118), Clark (104), Porter (95), Floyd (93), Bartholomew (83), Ripley (79), Monroe (70), Franklin (66) and Elkhart (61).

In addition to Marion County, these counties have reported five or more deaths: Lake (23), Hamilton (19), Johnson (16), Madison (13), Allen (9), Clark (8), Decatur (8), Hendricks (8), Franklin (7) and Lawrence (7).

The largest proportion of positive cases — 20.6% — are people ages 50-59. Women account for 54.9% of positive cases in Indiana, and men account for 45.1%.

People age 60 and older account for 88.6% of all Indiana deaths from COVID-19 but just 36.5% of total cases. Of the deaths reported in Indiana, 62.1% have been men.

The health department cautions that the number of positive cases is presumptive and includes only the number of positive test results reported to the agency.

The health department is providing case updates daily at about 10 a.m. based on results received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases — possibly thousands more — than those indicated by the number of tests.
