Indiana attorneys interested in joining the pool of volunteers at the Southern Indiana District Court are invited to attend a one-hour training session in October to learn more about representing indigent litigants as part of the court’s recruited counsel program.

Lawyers will learn about the Southern Indiana District Court’s volunteer attorney panel program along with the roles and responsibilities of those attorneys. The course will incorporate information from Indiana ethics rules, including competency to handle representations in unfamiliar matters and scope of representation and allocation of decision-making authority.

Magistrate Judge Mario Garcia, as well as Libby Roberts and Craig Wiley, two attorneys who have worked as recruited counsel, will lead the program. Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt will make opening remarks.

The training will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 8 in Room 172, the jury assembly room, in the Birch Bayh Federal Building & United States Courthouse, 46 E. Ohio St., Indianapolis. One hour of general continuing legal education credit and 0.5 hours of ethics credit are pending approval.

The program is free but attendance is limited to the first 16 participants who RSVP. To RSVP, send an email to [email protected].
