Baker & Daniels cuts more administrative staff

Baker & Daniels, one of the largest Indiana-based law firms, has cut nine staff positions and implemented a wage freeze for operational staff.

"I can confirm we have eliminated nine administrative and operational staff positions," Managing Partner Thomas Froehle said today. He declined to comment about reported associate layoffs.

He said firm management has continued to look at ways to become more efficient, which led to the cuts. The firm cut 22 staff positions in mid-December.

"Our first quarter was pretty strong, but we're trying to be prudent, as anyone would," he said.

Froehle also said there was a wage freeze for operational staff but not an across-the-board hiring freeze. He noted the firm has hired attorneys recently in the firm's South Bend and Chicago offices and that they will continue to grow the Chicago office.

Baker & Daniels had 329 attorneys firm wide as of Jan. 22, 2009, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal 's list of largest Indianapolis-area law firms. The firm has two offices in Indianapolis and one each in South Bend, Fort Wayne, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Beijing, China.
