More than year after her arrest on charges of murder and attempted feticide, Bei Bei Shuai is free on bail.

Shuai left the Marion County jail Tuesday morning alongside her attorney, Linda Pence.

On May 11, the Indiana Supreme Court had announced it would not grant transfer in the case, Bei Bei Shuai vs. State of Indiana, No. 49A02-1106-CR-486. The Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the trial court erred in denying Shuai bail.

Shuai ingested rat poison in a suicide attempt while pregnant, and the child died three days after its birth. But the COA ruled that Shuai had presented evidence supporting an alternate explanation for the hemorrhage that caused the baby’s death. It therefore remanded to the trial court for determination of bail.

Her bond was set at $50,000 on Friday. That same day, Pence announced the Bei Bei Shuai Legal Defense Fund, created to raise money for Shuai’s $5,000 bail.
