The Allen Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission announced Friday that Allen Superior Magistrate Judges Craig Bobay and Jennifer DeGroote, and Barrett & McNagny LLP attorney Michael Michmerhuizen have been selected as finalists for the judgeship that will be open as a result of Stephen Sims’ retirement.

The commission interviewed eight candidates Thursday. The three finalists will be submitted to Gov. Mike Pence for selection. The governor has 60 days after receiving written evaluations of the finalists to make the appointment to the bench.

Indiana Justice Steven David, who is commission chairman, announced the finalists.

“The commission members were extremely impressed with the caliber of all the applicants. They did not make our task easy – which speaks to the quality of the Allen County Bar,” he said in a news release.

Sims’ retirement is effective April 26. He has been on Allen Superior Court since 1997, serving in the Family Relations Division. He previously was Allen County prosecutor from 1983 to 1994 and a hearing officer/magistrate judge in Allen Circuit Court from 1995 to 1996.
