Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb will select one of three magistrate judges to fill the vacancy on the Lake Superior Court created when Judge Elizabeth Tavitas was appointed to the Indiana Court of Appeals this summer.

The Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission late Tuesday named magistrate judges Lisa A. Berdine, Thomas P. Hallett and Nanette K. Raduenz as finalists to succeed Tavitas in Lake Superior Court 3, family division. The recommendations came after the commission deliberated following interviews with 13 applicants.

Upon receiving the commission’s formal letter recommending the finalists, Holcomb will have 60 days to name Tavitas’ successor.

Raduenz, who served in Tavitas’ court, was tied as the top choice in a Lake County Bar Association survey of judicial candidates alongside Magistrate Judge Kathleen Belzeski, who was not among the chosen finalists. Hallett was ranked third in the bar’s survey, and finalist Berdine was ranked seventh.

Superior court judges in Lake, Allen, Marion and St. Joseph counties are nominated by commissions that make recommendations for the governor’s appointment. Lake County’s commission was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1973 and is chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter.
