Gary T. Bell has been named the acting United States attorney for the Northern District of Indiana following the confirmation of former Northern District Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Bell, who had been Kirsch’s first assistant U.S. attorney, has served as a supervisory attorney since 2014 after joining the office as an assistant U.S. attorney in 1999, initially focusing on violent and drug-related crimes before focusing on public corruption and white-collar crime cases.

Before his 20-plus-year career with the U.S. attorney’s office, Bell was a Lake County deputy prosecutor and had worked in private practice at the Merrillville law firm of Spangler, Jennings and Dougherty.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan in May 1987 and his law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1990.

Kirsch was confirmed to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals by the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.
