Fall 2020 Indiana bar admission ceremony to be held virtually

For the second time this year, new Indiana attorneys will be taking their oaths via videoconference during the Fall 2020 Bar Admission Ceremony, the Indiana Supreme Court has announced.

Justices will host the admission ceremony Sept. 21 entirely by videoconference due to social distancing measures in place amid the continued COVID-19 pandemic. The Spring 2020 Bar Admission Ceremony was also held remotely on May 5.

The fall 2020 event will be divided into three sessions and will be livestreamed on the high court’s website. Bar admittees will participate at the following times:

  • 10 a.m. – Last names starting with A-G.
  • 12 p.m. – Last names starting with H-O.
  • 2 p.m. – Last names starting with P-Z.

Typically, the new lawyers who pass the July bar exam are sworn in during an admission ceremony held in October at the convention center in downtown Indianapolis. Admittees, attired in business clothes, enter the large ballroom and individually introduce themselves to the justices and judges from the Indiana Supreme Court, the Indiana Court of Appeals and the Indiana Tax Court as well as the Southern Indiana District Court and the Northern Indiana District Court.

This year, however, the new attorneys will appear virtually, state their names and recite the oaths for the Indiana bar as well as for admission to the Northern and Southern Indiana District Courts. They will also sign the oath electronically to acknowledge their obligations to the profession.

More than 300 new lawyers are eligible to take part in the remote ceremony. Admittees already received details but should contact Tina Hopson with the court’s Office of Admissions & Continuing Education with any questions.

Family and friends interested in watching a ceremony can visit the court’s website.
