Greg Garrison

Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney Greg Garrison announced he will be retiring from his position on Dec. 20, with the retirement due to recent health concerns.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Josh Kocher will assume Garrison’s duties to ensure a smooth transition, according to a released statement.

“Serving this community has been the greatest honor of my career,” Garrison said in a press release. “I have encountered health concerns that make it imperative that I act with deliberate speed in wrapping up my work.”

Garrison had suffered a heart attack in 2023, then at the age of 75, but he resumed work shortly after the health incident.

He has been the county’s prosecuting attorney since 2022, when he defeated Jessica Paxson in the November general election.

In 1992, Garrison served on the prosecuting team that secured a conviction of former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson for rape in Marion County.

Garrison later joined WIBC as a conservative radio talk show host.

After the Tyson trial, he began to appear frequently on WIBC as a legal analyst, especially during the 1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson. He was given his own radio show on June 2, 1997. That show was syndicated to Network Indiana in 2000, replacing the “Mike Pence Show.”

Garrison received the 2003 Marconi Award as Personality of the Year for medium sized markets.

Kocher, who has been the chief deputy for Hamilton County for the last couple of years, said he has served in various roles in the prosecutor’s office for about 20 years now.

He told The Indiana Lawyer in a phone call that he’s ready to both maintain and increase the level of professionalism in the prosecuting attorney’s office.

According to the press release, questions regarding the transition process should be directed to Hamilton County Republican Party Chairman Mario Massillamany.
