Both of Indiana’s U.S. Attorney’s Offices will be participating in National Night Out events on Tuesday evening.

Hosted nationally on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out’s goal is to bring police and neighbors together by hosting block parties, cookouts, festivals, parades, safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events and visits from emergency personnel.

Indiana Southern District U.S. Attorney Zachary Myers said he will be joining community organizers, neighbors and law enforcement partners at events in the surrounding Indianapolis areas, while Indiana Northern District U.S. Attorney Clifford Johnson has “directed staff to attend community events throughout the Northern District, which includes areas within Northwest Indiana, South Bend and Fort Wayne.”

“A positive, ongoing relationship between neighbors and law enforcement is vital to building trust and keeping the public safe,” Myers said in a news release. “It is important for people to see that we are a part of the communities we serve. Through events like National Night Out, community members can place a friendly face to the law enforcement agencies that serve to protect them and engage in meaningful discussions about crime, safety, and responsibility.”

Johnson said his staff will also be meeting with law enforcement and first responders throughout the evening.

“National Night Out activities are important steps in building bridges between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” Johnson said in a news release. “I encourage all District residents to participate in National Night Out activities in order to create law enforcement and community partnerships, which will, in turn, build safer neighborhoods and stronger communities.”

Across Indiana, 79 cities will be hosting National Night Out events.
