We all know that being in-house can be liberating — no billable hours, and you are often the one setting the deadlines for outside counsel. However, there are a couple of downsides to being in-house, including isolation and lack of networking opportunities with peers, especially in other industries. The new IndyBar In-House Counsel Division has heard feedback from its membership regarding the isolation and networking concerns and has developed a CLE Getaway focused exclusively on issues facing in-house counsel every day.

The inaugural In-House Counsel CLE Getaway is June 16-18, 2022, in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Omni Hotel. Although separate from the IndyBar Bench Bar Conference, the event will be held at the same time and location so there will be plenty of opportunity to socialize with your outside counsel colleagues and judges. In addition, on Thursday afternoon, there will be meetings of the affinity bar associations — The Marion County Bar Association, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Indiana and the IndyBar Hispanic Lawyers Committee.

The In-House Counsel Division has put together a carefully curated lineup of panels including an ethics discussion, a scenarios-based discussion of common issues facing in-house counsel, a two-part session with Werten Bellamy Jr. on soft skills when dealing with the business and leadership, a discussion with Justice David about things we wish we knew before going in-house and an additional ethics session on celebrating the Juneteenth holiday. There will also be lots of networking and social activities, several of which are exclusive to the in-house counsel attendees, including a Friday lunch. Finally, there will be ticketed optional events in conjunction with the Bench Bar Conference like Thursday golf, a Thursday evening mixer and dinner at Churchill Downs and a Friday mixer and dinner celebration.

Our goal for the event is to create a fun and safe environment where in-house counsel can learn from their peers in other industries in a “judgment free” zone. Importantly, a major focus of the event will be networking so you can develop and foster relationships that will permit you to find a friendly in-house colleague whom you would feel comfortable with picking up the phone and asking questions without the concern of getting a big bill! To provide the most impactful learning and networking opportunities, registration for the event is limited to 45 attendees. Registration is currently open.

Because we all need CLE, we might as well do it in a fun and relaxing environment with your peers with content developed specifically to all in-house counsel no matter the experience level or industry. Tell your in-house counsel friends and register at indybar.org/inhousegetaway before slots fill up. I, along with the other event co-chairs, Josh Abel, Debi Dobbins and Kelly Hubler, look forward to seeing you all in Louisville in mid-June!•
